ACWP serves the community of Summers County through our Foster, Adoption and Rescue program. Animals enter our program through owner surrender, animal control seizure or animals that are picked up by the Animal Control Officer (ACO) and never claimed. All animals surrendered by their owners into our program must have a signed Owner Surrender Form on file when we take custody of the animal. The Intake Coordinator is the primary point of contact and ensures there is available space (Foster or K900 – our group’s nickname for the Animal Control Holding facility, which is managed by the county sheriff’s department) to take in the animal.
ACWP does not have the legal authority to seize animals who may be victims of neglect or abuse. If you suspect animal abuse or neglect, you must call the Summers County Sheriff’s Department at 304-466-3333.
We rely primarily on foster homes to house and care for the animals in our custody. K900 has limited space and is frequently at or over capacity. ACWP provides all needed supplies to foster families, including medical care. Foster provides the love! The Foster coordinator is the primary point of contact for all things related to fostering. Due to our limited capacity as volunteers, when animals come into our care, we almost immediately have to begin making plans for their re-homing or transfer to another rescue with more frequent adoptions. This is so that we are able to take in additional animals that need us. If there is an approved adoption application on file for a type of dog that comes into our care, we make every effort to set up a meet and greet with the approved adopters. If there are no pre-approved adopters that match a dog, we share the animals in our care to our network of stringently-vetted rescue partners. Dogs that are available for adoption through foster homes or Animal Control are listed here.
